The Padma Bridge is the world’s 122nd-largest multipurpose bridge over the Padma River. Padma Bridge, officially Padma Multipurpose Bridge, is the longest bridge in Bangladesh. It was the largest and most expensive construction project in Bangladesh. The bridge, built at a cost of 30,000 crore taka, was opened for traffic on June 25, 2022. Made of steel and concrete, Padma Bridge, 6.15 km long and 16.10 m wide, connects Munshiganj and Shariatpur districts. Bangladesh’s government has completed this big project with its own financing without foreign investment. The two-tiered bridge has a four-lane road on the upper tier and a railway track, fiber-optic cable, gas transmission pipeline, and power transmission lines on the lower tier. The Padma Bridge has enabled the movement of people and goods from 21 districts of the southwestern region of the country to the capital Dhaka. Hence, it will contribute significantly to economic prosperity and industrial development. Moreover, the bridge will also play an important role in the regional connectivity of Southeast Asia.
